Jobs and Business

Even though Orissa lags behind the rest of India in terms of economy, there are a wide variety of jobs available to those that live here. The state is rapidly increasing investments into the area and it is expected that the economy will soon make a rapid turn for the better.

Many people are employed through Orissa’s natural resources. There is a large mining community that mines coal, bauxite, iron ore, and chromite. Limestone and clay are both found in Orissa and both important elements of making cement. Because of this, there are large cement factories located in Rajgangpur and Bargarh. Annually, the two factories produce over seven hundred thousand tons of cement.

Also located in Rajgangpur and Bargarh are glass manufacturing plants. There are also glass plants in Khansbahal and Latikata.

Orissa’s forests are full of bamboo, which is used to make paper pulp. There are several paper mills in Orissa including one in Rayagada which produces over eighteen thousand tons a year.

The tobacco industry is wide spread throughout Orissa and employs a number of people. There are also many employees in the beverage and molasses industries.

There are some villages that specialize in brass products; however, there is too much competition from larger brass manufacturing companies for them to compete. Many villages are moving away from brass as their primary source of income.

There is a very large agricultural society in Orissa. There are thousands of people who work on farms. A large number of workers are employed by the seafood industry.

Several large companies have set up shop in Orissa. The top Indian IT consulting firms all have offices in Orissa. Companies such as IBM are also planning to open offices in the area.

One of the largest growing businesses in Orissa is steel. Companies have signed up to build over fifty new steel plants. South Korea is planning to build a twelve billion dollar steel plant in Orissa. It will be the single largest investment in the history of India. Along with steel, companies are coming to Orissa to build aluminum plants. Companies are investing in information technology, petrochemicals, and power plants which are coal based.

Reliance Industries is planning to build the world’s largest power plant in the Jharsuguda district of Orissa. Vedanta Resources has invested a large amount of money into the aluminum industry. It has also planned a $3.2 billion dollar education project which will set up universities similar to the Ivy League system in the United States.

Because Orissa has been designated a Special Economic Region, the amount of investments into the area have grown rapidly. The government has worked to create a top line infrastructure system and investors have responded very positively. The investments are varied and include hotels, ports, roads, airports, research and education.
